THINKCAR Thinkdiag for Honda review:

I think THINKCAR Thinkdiag is a great idea to be able to buy s/w for your car and pay a lot less than where you are forced to buy s/w for 100 cars/makes in one product at a very high price. It is a novel idea in favor of DIY. I needed a tool to de-activate the immobilizer after changing our a controller on my car. It involved re-programming an eeprom on the controller. The ThinkCar/ThinkDiag did just that. What I paid for the dongle plus the s/w for Honda/Acura only would have been more or less the same as what I had to paid a mechanic to do the re-programming. I am very happy with the product.

Honda HDS vs. i-HDS Diagnostic Software

 Questions:

  • What is the main difference between the HDS and I-HDS Honda diagnostic software?
  • Should be both installed?
  • Is the i-HDS require license from Honda dealer?

Simple answer:

Honda HDS vs. I-HDS: HDS use for old car, older 2017. Use with hardware is HIM (original or clone). And I-HDS use for new car, >2017 and more, use with hardware original is DST-i of Bosch.

Honda I-HDS replaces HDS. To diagnose newer cars, I-HDS is required. The interface is easier to use. So you need to install HDS first and I-HDS afterwards. HDS will NOT run by itself.

HDS cannot access IMMO anymore. You would need i-HDS installed. However, you will need to be a registered locksmith and have credentials for Honda. None of this is provided, therefor will not work. You can purchase key programming device if you want to do IMMO.

The J2534 Rewrite software is meant for the North American market. The Rewrite software allows you to update powertrain modules such as PCM and TCM.

A subscription to the i-HDS suite and an appropriate J2534 Pass-through device is needed. If your have a DST-i, the PCM Initialization software is included in the subscription.
NOTE: If you are trying to reprogram ECM/PCM/ECU’s or replace lost keys, the appropriate credentials and type of subscription is required.

How do I subscribe to the Honda Diagnostic System software?

Vehicle Communication Interfaces (VCI)

The I-HDS software supports the use of a generic pass-thru VCI that is compliant with SAE J2534-1 and J2534-2. However, American Honda Motor Co. recommends the Denso DST-I for use on Honda and Acura vehicles, Honda Canada Inc. recommends the Denso DST-nano for use on Honda and Acura vehicles, as Honda has worked closely with this manufacturers to ensure their hardware and our software interact safely and within the J2534-1 and J2534-2 specifications, for both diagnostics and reprogramming. If you choose to use a generic VCI, please carefully consider the customer and technical support options you will receive from your chosen device supplier.

The VCI Application Table below lists devices that either are approved and supported by Honda or are known to have completed and passed an independent, exhaustive validation program with our I-HDS software suite.

Reprogramming with the J2534 Rewrite Application in i-HDS

Included in the i-HDS software suite is a new reprogramming application called J2534 Rewrite. This application is made available to all subscribers of the i-HDS software suite and replaces the previous generation software, J2534 Honda Pass-thru Reprogramming Software.

You can use other J2534 devices. Some examples of tools that you can use are Snap On, CarDaq-Plus, CarDaq-M, GM MDI and much more!

This new application is compatible with generic VCIs that comply with SAE J2534. It must be used to reprogram any Honda/Acura vehicle equipped with ECUs that support reprogramming. Refer to the table below for legacy applicability for the programming of ECMs and PCMs. Though system dependent, late-model vehicles may be equipped with other ECUs that support reprogramming as well, e.g. ABS or VSA. J2534 Rewrite must be used to reprogram these control modules, as instructed in an applicable service bulletin.

As shown in this table, not all legacy Honda/Acura models are equipped with a reprogrammable ECM/PCM. Furthermore, all 2007 and later models not listed in the table are fully supported with this application.

2007- 2011 Honda CR-V PCM Idle Learn Proceedure

If you replace the air cleaner element, reset the PCM with the Honda HDS, and do the PCM idle learn procedure.

**Note:** Disconnecting the battery for a few minutes will also reset the PCM but doing so will cause you to have to reenter the radio code and perhaps stations.

PCM Idle Learn Procedure

The idle learn procedure must be done so the PCM can learn the engine idle characteristics.

Do the idle learn procedure whenever you do any of these actions:
-Replace the PCM.
-Reset the PCM.
-Update the PCM.
-Replace or clean the throttle body.
-Disassemble the engine or the transmission.

NOTE: Clearing the DTC's with the HDS does not require you to do the idle learn procedure.

Procedure

1. Make sure all electrical items (A/C, audio, lights, etc.) are off.
2. Reset the PCM with the HDS.
3. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), and wait 2 seconds.
4. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3,000 rpm without load (in P or N) until the radiator fan comes on, or until the coolant temperature reaches 194 degrees F (90 degrees C).
5. Let the engine idle for about 5 minutes with the throttle fully closed.

NOTE: If the radiator fan comes on, do not include its running time in the 5 minutes."

PCM=Powertrain Control Module
DTC =Diagnostic Test Code
HDS=Honda Diagnostic System

I did this to my '07 and to my surprise it did idle a little rough at first and smoothed out during the procedure.

Honda HDS J2534 Cable and System Review

I just done this. Took me many hours to configure everything.

I purchased a j2535 cable. It comes with a software.

I did a lot of readings about HDS for honda. It turned out you can use this j2535 for honda HDS too. At least it works for me after struggling with reinstalling windows xp and try different HDS versions. The software looks pretty professional. I've never seen dealer's. It's probably identical. I can access EGR valve and other parameters and even do some bidirectional test. I'm going to take a trip this weekend and do some live data test since I just replaced my EGR valve on my Honda.

The software I downloaded is here:

Free Download Honda HIM HDS 3.102.004 Diagnostic System

It does require a lot of skills on computer operating system and drivers configuration.

The easiest and best option would be purchasing a cable specifically for Honda with the installation CD. With the success of my experiment. I have confidence with the xhorse 3 in 1 or other cheap Chinese brand for Honda HDS. My cable is specifically for Toyota I suspect. Because when I access the ABS system, HDS gives me message saying that there’s some communication issues with the interface. I assume there’s some protocols was not written in the cable’s chip. I certainly know the Launch Creader 123 can read my ABS. But, what do I know.

Last tip:
Install these software under Windows xp 32 bit system. I tried on my Windows 10 64 bit, there’s no love. I wasted a lot of time on different operating systems, install and uninstall. I’m not sure Windows 7 32 bit, it didn’t work for me or I just don’t remember under time pressure to solve these problems.
